The 31 October deadline
The ATO’s usual deadline for individual tax returns is 31 October. The ATO says most registered tax agents have a special lodgment program and can lodge returns for their clients after that date.
Contact an agent before 31 October
If you are using a tax agent for the first time, or changing agents, the ATO says to contact them before 31 October to be part of their lodgment program. Your due date then depends on your situation and when you engaged the agent, so ask the agent.
Only a registered agent can charge a fee
The ATO says registered tax agents are the only people who can charge a fee to prepare and lodge your tax return. Tax agents must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB). Check a name or registration number with our tax agent check and confirm on the TPB register.
Behind on returns?
A tax agent can also prepare and lodge returns for earlier years. The ATO says getting up to date may help you avoid interest on tax debts and late lodgment penalties.
